Surah Al Adiyat English Translation:

  • By the racers, panting,
  • And the producers of sparks [when striking],
  • And the chargers at dawn,
  • Stirring up thereby [clouds of dust],
  • Arriving thereby in the center collectively,
  • Indeed, mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.
  • And indeed, he is to that testimony a witness.
  • And indeed, he is, in love of wealth, intense.
  • But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are turned up
  • And the secrets within the breasts are disclosed,
  • Indeed, their Lord, on that Day, will be Acquainted with them.

Name

The Surah’s name, Al-Adiyat, is derived from the opening verse’s phrase “Saadiyat,” which means “the runners” or “swift chargers.”

Period of Revelation

Whether it was revealed in Madinah or Makkah is up for contention. While some scholars, like Anas bin Malik, believe it to be Madani, others, like Abdullah bin Masud and Jabir, believe it to be Makki. According to the content, it was made public in Makkah early on.

Theme and Subject Matter

Evil deeds and a lack of gratitude for God result from denying the Hereafter.

On Judgment Day, even secret reasons and intentions will be revealed.

People abuse the gifts that God has given them for harmful and self-serving ends.

Pre-Islamic Arabia’s anarchy and uncertainty serve as a cautionary tale on responsibility.
